THE RICH HISTORY OF SMIT&DORLAS

Our history can be tasted by anyone who visits our coffee roasting factory. We would like to take you along a few important moments in time.

| 1822 |

DORLAS COFFEE

We would like to start our journey through time in Amsterdam and Gouda. Here, a certain Mr. Dorlas decided to start up a coffee roasting company. Before long, the company gained popularity and grew. Due to expansion, the company was moved to Amersfoort. It was then said “For the best coffee one must be in the middle of the country.” In other words, at Dorlas.

A SWEET SMELL ON THE LEIDSESTRAAT

It is Amsterdam in the early nineteenth century. Anyone strolling down the Leidsestraat, would be welcomed by the warm smell of freshly roasted coffee. This was all due to the small batch of coffee roasting in the delicacy shop owned by the Smit family.

This coffee was preferred by renowned hotels of the time. Smit’s son would personally deliver the coffee to each hotel on his cargo bike. Packed with bales of freshly roasted coffee. As the brand became more popular, the family decided to focus solely on coffee.

THE SMIT & DORLAS COFFEE ROASTING FUSION

More and more hotels request Smits coffee. The Smit family then decide to merge with Dorlas Coffee. Their first coproduced item: Smit & Dorlas Espresso Blend. Smit & Dorlas became suppliers for the La Cimbali espresso machines, and have since maintained the guaranty for the best service and equipment.

SMIT&DORLAS Caribbean

After an extensive feasibility study and a successful introduction to the Arubian market, SMIT&DORLAS Caribbean n.v. opened its first office in Aruba. When SMIT&DORLAS came on the Arubian market the market was dominated by instant coffee.

The objective was to concentrate on the top end of the Institutional Market, servicing hotels, restaurants, coffee shops, offices and also the hospital in Aruba. The employees were trained in The Netherlands, Belgium, Italy and the United States so they could serve the customers better. Today, SMIT&DORLAS Caribbean n.v. has a well-trained team of employees.

Independent coffee company

On September 8th 1998, SMIT&DORLAS Caribbean n.v. became an independent coffee company in Aruba with SMIT&DORLAS Koffiebranders b.v. in the Netherlands as the Main Supplier.

| 1999 |

THE NEW COFFEE ROASTING FACTORY IN MIJDRECHT

In 1999 Smit & Dorlas moved to Mijdrecht. Despite the size of the factory, it maintains an artisanal character. Wherever you go, the history is seen, tasted and smelled.

Celebration of Inauguration

November 6th, 2001, SMIT&DORLAS Caribbean n.v. celebrated the Official Inauguration of its own new building with offices, showroom, warehouse and a Coffee House at De La Sallestraat 30, in Oranjestad, Aruba.
